about

"Being serenaded by Tilley is like being in the presence of an angel. Her voice is suffused with light and hovers around you, gently caressing yet filled with an immense power. She is a rare and beautiful talent…"
- Mikelangelo (of The Tin Star and The Black Sea Gentlemen)

"Impressed with @tilleysong's beautiful voice. Good luck crowdfunding your CD t.co/rSPYzFyS #tasmania"
- Neil Gaiman (@neilhimself, via Twitter)

Originally from Tasmania and now residing in Melbourne, audiences everywhere fall in love with Tilley's unique, powerful, and particularly versatile voice, performing everything from folk to pop to jazz to gospel to funk & soul to unclassifiable improvisation & sound art. This is Tilley's first release - a full-length, crowd-funded album.

"Songs From A Cold Island" is a collection of Tilley's best songs so far, some started 10 years ago, most written in the past 2 years. It is the completion of one part of a journey, the acknowledgement of where Tilley has come from as an artist & a person, enabling her to now move forward on new and exciting paths.

The album was made possible through a crowdfunding campaign at www.pozible.com/coldisland, where she raised over 3x her initial goal.

Ukulele, fantasy, teasing and heart-rending. Melancholy, wistful, broken, but hopeful and full of love. Keep an eye out for her next release, coming soon.

Track Name: Angels
Be an image
In my mind
Be the angel
I never look far to find
Stand up on that pedestal
And don't you dare come down
Oh, you'll look so beautiful
As the sun goes down

Don't turn on the light no don't
you break the spell that is our breath
and us together isn't it
the greatest thing you've ever felt?

Standing in the light
With a halo round them all
I always call them angels
And they never survive the fall
Never survive...

Faith from storybooks
Worship from afar
A close & fervent pressing
Then a painful tear apart

Don't you see you must live up
to everything that I've imagined
I can make you happy if
you only stay so very still

Standing in the light
With a halo round them all
I always call them angels
And they never survive the fall

Oh, I've got angels, watching over me
Angels, watching over me
Angels, flying over me
Angels, watching over me...
Track Name: Over
Don't despair
You're caught in a snare
But it's not as bad as you think
Pull yourself up to the brink, and look.... over

Life is time
It slows, and it speeds up
You can't control it
Just watch where you step, and step.... over

You watch the fire
The night creeps in around you
Open air
Is what you crave, but you know, oh,
It's too late
To take a walk, but just outside
Your window,
I'm dancing, dancing, dancing in your garden...
Your garden...
And I look over...
And I step over...
Track Name: For Real
You know it's time
When it's getting hard to hope
You know it's time
When it's getting hard to fool yourself
You give it your all
You work til you choke
But it's getting hard
To see through their smoke

You hold on tight
Hoping they change the deal
But try as you might
You know it's not for real
Ah.... you know it's not for real
Ah.... you know it's not for real

You listen to sad songs
You put the photos away
You say all the words
You know you're s'posed to say
You act out a part
Feels like it's been played before
By a thousand other losers
Who didn't know the score

You hold on tight
Hoping they change the deal
But try as you might
You know it's not for real
Ah.... you know it's not for real
Ah.... you know it's not for real
Track Name: Long Time Coming
Coming in to the airport, late in the day
Someone's here with a car & a hug, but my mind is miles away
And it's too late to deny it, too late to run
I'm overdressed, my suitcase is heavy & I'm standing in the sun

Long ride home
Long day ahead
It's been a long, long time coming
But I'm impatient, gotta be careful where I tread

First flick of a light switch, in an empty house
Burns loneliness in like a brand
Got a callous, got a headache, got a recurring dream
Gotta push past it, there's too much to do, there's too much at stake
You wait in your tower, not far away
I know how it feels, to be counting the days
But I cannot promise, what I cannot see
And I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I never meant to trample your dreams

Long way to go
Long days ahead
It's been a long, long time coming
But I'm impatient, gotta be careful where I tread

Long way to go
Long days ahead
I know, I know it'll take a long, long time
But you gotta, you gotta be careful... careful where you tread...
Track Name: Muse
I got a muse, he's got hair like feathers
Lifts me up, up... up above the weather
Keeps me singin' all the time, when we are together

He's got a face like joy, and fingers like music
When the rest of the world, is ever confusing
He brings me back, don't make me do no choosing

Late nights & red wine, we got it going on
My tired soul feels so fine when he sings his song
Round these beautiful people, nothing feels wrong
Nothing's wrong...

I got a muse, with kisses so delightful
He just gives, gives & he's never ever spiteful
If you want some relaxing, he's got a whole nightful
Track Name: Where She Goes
Ask the sailor where she's gone
Then you ask the baker's son
Look for her among the lights
You'll find her by the waterside

But you will never hold her hand
And you will never understand
You will ask of where she goes
But she is not for you to know

I'm puzzled too, so don't ask me
I glimpsed her out upon the sea
But John says just an hour before
He found her on the forest floor

And Dan swears black & blue, I'm told
He saw her climb the mountain cold
She'll put a fever in your brain
And you will never rest again

You will catch her, so it seems
But you'll awake from cloudy dreams
You will find your bed gone cold
She is not, for you, to know

Ask not of where she goes
She is not for you to know
Track Name: Spun Gold
Down the river there's a field with grass and stones
I left my darling, when it was overgrown
The grass is long, the hill above is steep
I left my darling, when he was fast asleep
Between the mountain's shadow and the morning sun
Dirt beneath my feet, and the work here is done
Listen to the river, and at night the rain will fall
I left my darling… I did not leave him at all

You hair like spun gold, like spun gold…

I put to you the question of what follows now
Will you walk on in your pattern, or break the spell somehow?
How can you be so fragile, and yet be so strong?
How can I be by your side, and yet still go on?

You hair like spun gold, like spun gold
You hair like spun gold, like spun gold
Your eyes they grow cold, they grow cold
You hair like spun gold, like spun gold

Autumn comes and that's when all the hard work starts
No time in this day now for a broken heart
You don't understand, upon your throne the day is long
This is not the world you live in - this is not your song

You hair like spun gold, like spun gold…

Please stay, please stay
Even as you go
Please stay, please stay
With your hair of spun gold
Track Name: In A Pulse
In a pulse
In the way my heart quickens
In a pulse
In the way my blood thickens
In a pang
In a desperate left-turn sidestep
What are you finding?
Behind your couch, in candles blown out

I am finding pieces of you
Wrapped in all the words we were
In between a particle of dust
and winter's plans
You are there

And now you're not
Where you promised you would be
And I worked so hard
To be what you expected of me
And the hardest part
is not that you're not my lover
it's that I don't have a teacher anymore
I don't have a teacher anymore...

And yes; in a pulse
In the way my heart quickens
In a pulse
In the way my blood thickens
I hear what you taught me, and can no longer uphold
Urging me onwards & up
Urging me onwards...
Track Name: Fly
I'm trying to convince myself that my body is not me
That I'm not defined by my curves and lines,
and that my heart is free
That I am worth more than my clothes, more than a number
Some days I can love myself, today I'm going under
Going under

I just want to be free,
To feel the wind along my skin
To feel the brightness from within
I just want to be free,
To feel light and unchained
To take off this old heavy shell
And fly...

I'm kneeling on the floor of everything that I don't want to be
I'm trying to remember the words of those who love me
But no matter what they say, the beast rises in my throat
And takes me down again, down again,
Oh save me, sane me

I just want to be free,
To feel the wind along my skin
To feel the brightness from within
I just want to be free,
To feel light and unchained
To take off this old heavy shell
And fly…

Bent mirror, show me,
Warped image, burn me,
Twisted eyes, hurt me,
Oh how you hurt me…
Old friend, hold me,
New friend, scold me,
Sickness, take me,
I won't let you take me...

I just want to be free,
To feel the wind along my skin
To feel the brightness from within

I just want to be free,
To feel light and unchained
To take off this old heavy shell
Oh, take off this old heavy shell
Please take off this old heavy shell
And fly...
Track Name: i am not an island
I am not an island
although I feel these waters closing in;
I am not an island

His hands like waves shaped my shores,
and her words the wind
that whips the sand
and bends my trees

but I am not an island.

Time and tide ebbed,
driftwood gifts -
the things I learned
from broken hearts and joy
and now

how fast the bridges build
(and burn, and burn)
and build again

I hold the wind and waves and sand
in my own hand

I am not an island.
Track Name: Maybe I Suffer
This is how I feel
And I won't let you tell me, it isn't real
This is how I feel
And I won't let you tell me, it shouldn't be
Maybe you can stay
In the centre of your own little world
Zen doesn't work for everyone
And it sure doesn't seem to work for this whirlwind girl

Maybe I suffer, maybe I suffer
Maybe I do
Maybe I suffer, but I sure have a lot more fun than you

This is how I feel
And admittedly it hasn't got me very far
Though they used to say, we were like two trains on the same track
Two halves of the same star
Now they tell me
It's clearly headed for disaster
But they don't see you
They don't see what you look like
The morning after

Maybe I suffer, maybe I suffer
Maybe I do
Maybe I suffer, and I'm still not sure
If it's worth it for you
Maybe I suffer, but when you're looking
Oh so fine
That's when I deserve you,
That's when you are all mine

When it fits, it fits so well
When it doesn't, it is hell
When my mind has gone too far
Yours is inside your guitar
Ah, see me
Ah, hear me
Ah, it's not your responsibility
Ah, but I'm sick of invisibility

Maybe I'll suffer, maybe I'll suffer
Maybe I won't
Coz I decide now, what I give out
And what I don't
This is how I feel,
But I won't let it take over
Let tomorrow be tomorrow...
But baby, tonight...
...Hey, why don't you come over?
